Acheron Springs
One of the natural attractions of the Municipality of Parga, on the border with the Municipality of Souli are the Springs of Acheron (2 km from the main road of Glyki –Parga). Acheron is a river in the Epirus region and crosses the Prefectures of Preveza, Thesprotia and Ioannina.
The springs of Acheron are located in the Prefecture of Ioannina, in the condition Tamaros at an altitude of 1600 meters, near the village of Glyki. It flows into the Ionian Sea, in the village of Ammoudia of Preveza Prefecture, where it forms a Delta which formed the two main states of the region, the swamp of Splantza and Valanidorrachis. The Acheron river because of tradition and environmental value, attracting many visitors from the springs to the estuary. The length is 52 km while the waters of the irrigated approximately 85000 acres, of which 28000 are in the Prefecture of Thesprotia and 57000 in Preveza . Alternatively, the Acheron was known as Blackwater, Phanariot or Kamariotis river.
In Acheron you can enjoy various pleasant individual or group sporting activities such as horse Riding, Rafting, River Trekking, Canoe – Kayak, Archery and cycling along the river.
Arriving in the vicinity of the Acheron it’s worth to visit the historical villages of Souli with the famous Watermills, the Nekromanteion of Acheron, the beaches of the Municipality of Parga, the cosmopolitan and picturesque town of Parga with the lush Island of Virgin Mary as well as the historical Castle.
